Carrefour Poland celebrates the World Environment Day

Carrefour Poland joined the Green Ribbon Campaign #ForThePlanet organized for the World Environment Day. As part of its ecological commitments, the retail chain announced that Carrefour Group will reduce the amount of packaging for its own-brand products by 5% in comparison with 2017.

The World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June. This year, Carrefour Poland was a partner of the activities conducted by the UNEP/GRID Centre in Warsaw, as part of the Green Ribbon Campaign #ForthePlanet. For many years, the retail chain is actively engaged in Poland in initiatives related to sustainable development and respect of the environment, conducting projects for fighting food waste and protecting biodiversity.

As part of its ecological commitments, the company announced that Carrefour Group committed itself to a 5% reduction until 2022 of the amount of packaging for its own brands in comparison with 2017. In addition and especially for this day, the chain prepared in cooperation with the Eko-Punkt Packaging Recovery company, animations and contests about waste segregation and recycling for clients of Carrefour store at the Mokotów Mall. Apart from these workshops which raised a lot of interest, employees at the Headquarters could pick up green ribbons at the reception as a symbol of their ecological resolutions.

Carrefour conducts many initiatives related to environmental protection, with the aim to preserve natural resources, and consequently, ensure a sustainable future for the generations to come. The chain develops projects in the field of deforestation prevention and employees’ awareness on this topic. Besides, and through the project “Bee hotels”, which are located on the roofs of certain stores, the chain contributes to the protection of bees in urban areas and helps raising awareness on urban bee-keeping.

The World Environment Day is celebrated in over 100 countries and gathers millions of people who care about the future of our planet. This year’s edition was organized under the leitmotiv #BeatPlasticPollution, with the aim to shed light on plastic pollution and on the means to prevent it. The World Environment Day was celebrated in Poland by many cities, companies and institutions. Many sites across Poland were illuminated in green such as the Palace of Culture and Science and the Śląsko-Dąbrowski bridge in Warsaw, as well as the City Hall in Bielsko-Biała, Olsztyn and Poznan. A intersectorial debate was also organized with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of the Environment, Warsaw authorities, NGOs, the scientific community and companies.
